Don't Expect A 'Watchmen' Sequel

 In  Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Sequels

Although it is one of the most beloved graphic novels of all time, I was alway fairly skeptical about the odds of Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" movie achieving any sort of huge success.  It's a fantastic story, but it had a couple of obstacles stacked against it.

First of all, although it is celebrated as one of the greatest graphic novels of all time... it's not one of the most popular ones.  In other words, you'd be hard pressed to find an average person on the street who knows who The Silk Spectre is.  But ask anyone who Wolverine is... and you get my point.

The other challenge the film faced was that "Watchmen" is a VERY different kind of "comic book" than people are used to.  This is what makes it such an exceptional story, but also one that makes it a tough sell.

The long and the short of it is, "Watchmen" failed to meet financial expectations for the studio.

Over in the comic book world, Dan DiDio, the SVP/Executive Editor for DC Comics, is pushing forward with not only a sequel to the Watchmen graphic novel, but a multiple prequel comic book miniseries and other spin-offs as well.

This has understandably started speculation online that a "Watchmen" sequel FILM may also be in the plans.

THIS IS NOT THE CASE.  Not only have I personally been told by someone very inside Warner Bros that they want nothing more to do with "Watchmen", Nikki Finke is also reporting:

"...a well-placed insider tells me: "There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot. With regards to the comics, well, I guess anything is possible. I'll keep my opinion to myself as to whether it's a smart idea to do so."

So while it does look like we can expect to see more from "Watchmen" in the comic world, don't expect to see them on the big screen again... at least not any time soon.

    Obviously, because:
    a) Watchmen made no money
    and
    b) They killed Rorschach at the end of the movie, he was the center of all the attention, you can't make a sequel without him.

    Completely agree Mikano,

But I also think there's another reason. If one of the reasons the first Watchmen movie didn't do well was because it just wasn't popular enough... well... let's be honest... the Watchmen movie didn't make any NEW fans, so why would WB ever think that maybe another one would do any better?

As a fan of the graphic novel I really enjoyed the movie, I knew it would have many obstacles against it and it sucks that it didn't do well in the box office but I wasn't surprised. It just is not your average super hero movie. I still don't like the idea of DC movie forward with sequel and prequels to Watchmen.
