Five Favorite Steve Carell Moments
In
Actors/Actresses
"Dinner for Schmucks"
marks the year's third big movie featuring Steve Carell ("Date Night"
and "Despicable Me" are the other two) and in the film, the comic actor
will be reuniting with his "40-Year Old Virgin" co-star Paul Rudd.
Before settling in on the main course of "Schmucks," we wanted to
take a look back at five of our favorite Steve Carell moments over the
last few years.
The Office: The Injury
While many "Daily Show" fans were already familiar with Steve
Carell, the actor really came to small screen prominence on NBC's "The
Office." As Dunder- Mifflin branch manager Michael Scott, Carell
brings a neediness and naivete to the role, along with some fantastic
physical humor.
This clip, from the season two episode, "The Injury," is one of our all-time favorite Carrell and "Office" moments:
Get Smart
Steve Carell, action star? Well, if that action star is Agent
Maxwell Smart, yes! In "Get Smart," Carell used his physicality and
great comic timing to pay homage to Don Adams the way only he can.
We love this scene in the airplane rest room. Classic Carell. Classic Maxwell Smart.
Little Miss Sunshine
"Little Miss Sunshine" was an indie-darling turned mainstream hit
turned Oscar-nominated film. The entire cast -- from Oscar-winner Alan
Arkin to newcomer Abigail Breslin -- did a superb job and Carell in
particular, did a great job as a background player who had his own
moments of brilliance.
We love this scene where his character explains his back-story:
The Office: Lady Suit
In Season 3's "The Negotiation," Michael tries to take the
upper-hand when negotiating with Darryl Philbin (the great, Craig
Robinson), only to find out he made a bit of a mistake with his choice
of suit:
The 40-Year Old Virgin
"The 40-Year Old Virgin" was not just Steve Carell's breakout movie
role, it was the big break for Judd Apatow as well. Despite years of
critical acclaim for his television series like "Freaks and Geeks" and
"Undeclared," Apatow had failed to achieve real mainstream success
until "Virgin."
Likewise, while the film was released just as "The Office," starring
Carell, was preparing to enter its second season (by the skin of its
teeth), the actor had also yet to really find his mainstream breakout
role.
This clip, which is NOT safe for work (language) is one of the
reasons the film and Carell's career took off so much. Even as a
longtime Apatow fan, what convinced me that I absolutely must
see "The 40-Year Old Virgin" in theaters was the clip of Carell,
screaming in pain while having his chest waxed, breaking out into a
flurry of obscenities, peppered with the absolutely pitch-perfect,
"Kelly Clarkson" in the trailer for the film.
Here's the scene in its entirety:
