What We're Reading: Sandra Bullock Makes Box Office History
In
Actors/Actresses, Box Office, Industry
At this time last year, the idea that Sandra Bullock would be the top box office star of 2009 would have seemed downright laughable. After all, the actress hadn't appeared in a film in two years and was no-longer considered the be the bankable ingenue she was in the mid 1990s.
My how things changed. The stellar success of both "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side" have given Bullock's career new life.
Women & Hollywood has a great post about Bullock's successful year at the box office. Not only did Bullock take the box office crown (the first time a woman got the honor since Julia Roberts nabbed it in 1999), Bullock has broken other ground too.
And to to top it off according to EW: "Bullock is now the only actress ever to have a film marketed with her name solely above the title (i.e. based on her star power alone, and not a franchise or tentpoll picture) pass the $200 million mark in domestic gross."
Congrats Sandra but it is a sad testament to how far we have to go.
My sentiments exactly. It's fantastic that the actress has had such a tremendous year, but it's also profoundly sad that only in 2009 did a film with a woman as the sole headliner make over $200 million.
What do you think of Sandra Bullock's box office comeback?
