It turns out "Avatar" was even bigger than we thought! The projected totals for the film on Sunday turned out to be short by about $16 million! James Cameron's sci-fi stunner took in $77.3 million in the US! That makes it the best December opening of all time, edging by 2007's "I Am Legend."
Ticket sales only dropped 3% from Saturday to Sunday -- something extremely uncommon in the movie business. Movie goers are less likely to leave the house to see a new release on Sunday, but the strong word of mouth buzz around "Avatar" proved that even snow storms can't keep fans away!
Around the world, the estimates were also under-reported, with total worldwide box office figures topping $236.5 million! Already this is the best global debut ever for a non-sequel and one of the best international openings of all time.
Buzz continues to ride high on the film and we expect the box office assault to continue throughout the end of the year.
