Thanksgiving weekend is one of the biggest weekends at the box office. Three new films entered wide-release this week and hold-overs, like "New Moon" and "The Blind Side" continue to rake in movie goers.
Let's first look at Thursday's numbers, where "New Moon" experienced a brief upset from the family drama and all-around-feelgood film "The Blind Side." Starring Sandra Bullock, the film played well with families and audiences out at the theater after the big meal, raking in $9.49 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
"New Moon" wasn't too far behind with $9.2 million and "Ninja Assassin," "Old Dogs" and "2012" rounded out the top 5.
Here's a look at Thursday's numbers:
- The Blind Side - $9,485,000
- The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $9,200,000
- Ninja Assassin - $4,555,000
- Old Dogs - $4,200,000
- 2012 - $4,050,000
Now Friday is where it gets more interesting. As both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have pointed out, "New Moon" has crossed the $200 million domestic mark at the box office. That means that in just 8 days, "New Moon" has managed to top what "Twilight" earned its 20 weeks in release.
The film took in $17.9 million on Friday, with "The Blind Side" coming in second with $16.2 million. To put it another way, "The Blind Side" made more yesterday than it did on opening day. Domestic gross for "The Blind Side" currently sits at $76.3 million. That's not "Twilight" money, but for a film that didn't get a huge promotional campaign, this is incredibly impressive. The success of "The Blind Side" caps off a banner year for Sandra Bullock.
This is what the estimated Friday numbers look like:
- The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $17.9 million (bringing it to a spectacular $206.1 million in just 8 days)
- The Blind Side - $16.2 million
- 2012 - $7 million
- Old Dogs - $6.85 million
- A Christmas Carol - $6.64 million
